Frequently Asked Questions

I am new to the Zen Center. What should I do next?

*

Welcome! You might want to start by attending one of our Introduction to Zen sessions, Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. These sessions are optional.

The class includes sitting meditation instruction, a brief introduction to other practice forms, questions and answers, a 30 minute sitting period and, if desired, a one on one consultation with a senior teacher.

Wear loose-fitting clothes and please arrive 5 minutes early. A donation of $5 is suggested.

I’m about to attend my first retreat. What should I expect?

*

Whether it’s a one or multi-day retreat, the format is generally the same: alternating periods of sitting and walking meditation, as well as a kong-on interview with the teacher, and periods of chanting. A one-day retreat ends in an informal meal, while multi-day retreats include “formal” meals, eaten in the Korean monastic style.

Consult our About Retreats page for more detail.

For multi-day retreats, you’ll want to bring the basics for an overnight stay including a sleeping bag or blankets, towel, toothbrush and toiletries.

You may also wish to bring cash to offer dana to the teacher at the end of the retreat.

What other organizations is the Zen Center affiliated with?

*

The Chogye Zen Center is part of the Kwan Um School of Zen, which has local Zen centers throughout the U.S. and across the globe. A list of these Zen centers can be found on the Kwan Um School of Zen website.

Our sister temple is the Chogyesa Zen Temple of New York. Chogyesa is located near Central Park, and is open to visitors and practitioners.

CIZCNY is an active member of the Buddhist Council of New York.

Is the Zen Center on social media?

*

Yes, we are on Facebook and Youtube.

I’m ringing the buzzer, but there’s no answer. What should I do?

*

The intercom volume is soft and First Ave is loud. If you’re not getting a response, first make sure you’re ringing 2D. Then, ring again!
